Buildings & Scenes

Barns, old houses, trees with birds - I live in the country and see these things all the time. They make wonderful rugs. It's fun to create the weather or the season - wind blowing, blossoms falling, cloudy skies. House rugs are lovely presents for someone moving into a new house.

Available rugs are at the top of the list and a link will take you right to Big Cartel for easy purchasing.

Blue Bird Bush

I find this rug soft and mysterious. It's quite a large rug–31" high by 20" wide. The background is varied, with browns and blues, just as a distant forest background woud be in real life. The bird is still and it's large compared to the bush. Overlapping shells form cloud-like shapes above the bird as it sits on the top of the bush. It has quite a presence on the wall (and is equipped with muslin sleeve and dowel). This rug is in a private collection in Buffalo, New York. | Click title for larger image.

Spring Barn

This large rug (20" high by 35" wide) depicts an enormous old barn that I discovered in a black and white drawing from the 19th century. Judging from the number of windows alone, this barn must be huge! A flowering tree stands next to the barn and the blossoms are falling on the ground and swirling in the air. To make you laugh, I've placed two really large birds on the roof. I find this a very happy rug. It's made of hand-dyed and as-is wools on linen foundation fabric. This rug is in a private collection in Pennsylvania.

Spring House

Another house rug – this one with a flowering spring tree next to a many-windowed old house. This rug is backed with reproduction fabric, which you can just see at the edges. It's in a private collection. | Click title for larger image.

Early Morning Tree

This was one of my first major rugs. I was inspired by the lovely 19th century way of depicting a tree (there are many ways but this one caught my attention). The idea that a tree can be simplified so much that single leaves stand in for branches full of leaves is a wonderful idea. I liked making a few of the leaves red. The two large birds at the top of the tree are curious and full of life. The blue sky is varied and makes me feel the wind. This rug is in the private collection of a long-time friend in my small town. | Click title for larger image.

Autumn House

A friend purchased this rug for his wife who is a local realtor. The border around the house scene is filled with autumn colors – orange, rust, yellow, dark brown – some made with plaids that add a lot of visual interest. | Click title for larger image.

Quiet Barn

Again, the birds! Two yellow birds stand atop the old-fashioned dark red barn. The large doors, hay mow and smaller doors and windows are a grey that depicts the quiet stillness of a barn's interior. Two small trees stand next to the barn with three bars in front of them that are abstractions of a fence. I've always enjoyed the play between representation and abstraction in my craft. This rug was purchased by a local environmental group to use for a raffle prize. | Click title for larger image.

Albany House

Friends got together to commission a rug for a new couple. There is an image of a house because they moved into a new one together. He adores birds, so there is the red bird atop their new house. I made it hoping it would combine the things they loved in one rug. | Click title for larger image.

Twilight House

Backed with reproduction fabric (a quiet gold with a small pattern), this rug is one of my numerous house rugs. I love to make them because so often customers are attracted to an image of an old house because of all it says about time and home and comfort. Many times, customers give them to friends as a housewarming gift. This rug measures 11" high by 17" wide. It's hung on the wall by a dowel in a muslin sleeve. This rug is in a private collection in Chicago. | Click title for larger image.
