Animals Small & Delicate

rabbit_rug

One of my earliest rugs was of a rabbit with blue hydrangeas inspired by my family's vacation in Truro. We were staying at a cottage near the lighthouse and every night the rabbits would come out and mosey around. I often create commissioned rugs for people who want to honor their favorite pet, often a beloved dog or cat. I add the name of the family pet to the rug to make it that much more special. The wild animals - rabbits, birds - make wonderful subjects. In the list below, click on an image or its title to expand the view.

Rugs that are available (placed at the top of the list) have a link taking you directly to my shop on Big Cartel.

Tough Cat

This is the kind of cat that comes and goes and he/she pleases. I found two wools for the background that, for me, make a nice abstract feeling. This rug measures 10" high by 16" wide, and has a muslin sleeve and dowel for displaying on the wall. It's in a private collection in Idaho. | Click title for larger image.

Sweet Friendship

Sweet Friendship is a variation on an old and favorite theme. Two cats, spending their lives together, wondering about mice and food, and getting plenty of sleep. Sounds good to me! This rug is made of a variety of tans for the background. The rusty wool for the brown cat has some bright green threads in it, so I added more bright green for stripes. The dark cat is a combination of browns and near black. It measures 17" high by 24" wide, comes with a muslin sleeve on the back and a dowel for hanging on the wall. This rug is in a private collection in California. | Click title for larger image.

Singing Bird

This rug was purchased when my work was featured in The New York Times a few years ago. My husband adored birds and had made many drawings that I sometimes refer to when I make my rugs. My theme seems to almost always include a branch and some flowers and a brilliantly or delicately colored bird. I like the slightly rounded shape of this rug. It's in a private collection in New Hampshire. | Click title for larger image.

September Rabbit

Sometimes rabbit rugs just seem to never stop! This small rug has a quiet, watchful rabbit. The bluish border is reminiscent of the deep woods. I love making rabbit rugs – the variety of fur and the eyes, and the tail, are fun to work out. This rug is in a private collection. | Click title for larger image.

Scarlet Tanager

A bright red bird on a branch with small pink and blue flowers. It's so easy to make bird rugs – the colors of trees and flowers and sky combined with whatever coloration the bird has all seem to go together so well. This small rug is in a private collection. | Click title for larger image.

Rusty Rooster

My sister-in-law gave me some huge bags of rolled wool that were to be used for braided rugs. I've loved having these and I cut off lengths, pin them together and dye them all together in one bath. The plaids create wonderful colors with this dyeing method. This rug is full of movement as well as subtle color fields. When I sold this rug, the customer asked if I could change the star to a Star of David, which I was happy to do. It's in the private collection and has been added to a larger collection of rooster rugs. | Click title for larger image.

Rooster

This was one of my first rugs, made long ago when I ripped out and remade huge sections of a rugs, just to learn how to do it as well as I possibly could. Originally this rooster was going to have a white picket fence beside it, but somehow that changed to a brick. It taught me a lot and was hard to say goodbye to it. It is in the private collection of a person who takes very good care of it, so I've calmed down about letting go of it. | Click title for larger image.

Red Leaf Rabbit

I study the designs and subjects of old rugs. I ran across this way of making a border once and really loved making my own version. The center area was great for a rabbit – it all seemed to fit together. This rug is made of hand-dyed and as-is wool on a linen foundation. It's in a private collection in Bovina, New York. | Click title for larger image.

Quick Chicken

Chickens seem quick to me, at least when they're outside searching for bugs and seeds to eat. In some rugs, the border is really important. It can reflect the interior image by using those wools in either a random or organized pattern. This rug is in a private collection, but if you have a penchant for chickens, let me know. | Click title for larger image.

Chase & Maisie

A friend commissioned this rug as a surprise birthday present for her husband. It celebrates their great dogs, Chase and Maisie. I don't know how I arrived at the idea of enclosing them in a dog bone shape. The bright colors on the sides echo the colors in the interior. I loved putting Chase and Maisie above the dogs. If you have dogs you'd like to feature in a rug, get in touch. | Click title for larger image.

A small rug with a quiet bird resting on a branch and surrounded by flowers. I have a small flock of mourning doves staying at my house this summer. I see one of them almost every time I am outside. Sometimes we sit together, a distance apart, and just stare at each other. This rug is in the collection of a dear friend, an avid bird-lover. It's 6.5"high by 12" wide, made of hand-dyed and as-is wools on linen. | Click title for larger image.

Brownie & Pinkie

Brownie & Pinkie was simply a lot of fun to make. It's the old theme of the two cats who spend their lives together, tending to each other's needs and just being pals. Sometimes a rug will have a bowl of milk between them. Often, the expressions on the cats' faces is what brings the most laughs. Brownie & Pinkie, I'm glad to say, is in a private collection. But, if you have beloved felines, get in touch and we'll celebrate them in a special way. | Click title for larger image.

Best Friends

Best Friends is one of the long series of cat rugs. It joins Brownie & Pinkie and Happy Companions on my site as examples of this type of rug. The dark lines in the background add to the liveliness of the scene. Again, goofiness prevails. This rug is in a private collection, but I'd be happy to depict your favorite felines in a rug of your own. | Click title for larger image.

Little Brown Bird

Bird rugs are so great. There are so many kinds and each one is so beautiful. Most of my bird rugs are small, like most birds themselves, and so are very intimate, again like the birds themselves are. This rug is in a private collection. | Click title for larger image.

February Scotties

I made February Scotties this winter. The scottie rug theme is actually one of the few that I seem to return to time and again. I think it's because of all the scottie dog lovers! The background tries to create the kind of ruckus feel that real scotties have a habit of causing. The dogs are connected and spirited. I love making dog rugs–I've made a Lab, an English spaniel, and several scotties. This rug measures 20" high by 28" wide and is available for purchase for $650. Click here to visit my online store.

Little August Rabbit

I pull rabbits into my life every so often, especially when things seem hectic and a little overwhelming. Rabbits calm me down and make me happier. This rabbit is mostly grey with a few brown and brownish pink stripes. Its large red eye is surrounded by soft grey. Blue and pink flowers are at either side. I like the green edge, how that echoes the grass a rabbit like this would undoubtedly be nibbling. It measures 10" high by 15" wide, and is made of 100% wool on linen.

Happy Companions

Two goofy cats peer out from this rug. I've made a number of "best friend" rugs and all the cats definitely quirky personalities. If you have a cat, you know this is true. This rug is in a private collection. | Click title for larger image.

Cape Cod Rabbit

Cape Cod Rabbit was one of my first real rugs–created on a family vacation in Truro. We often sat out in the yard after dinner (and before our almost nightly trip to Ptown) and watched the small rabbits quietly going about their way in the grass. Beside the door of our cabin was a hydrangea bush that produced lovely blue flowers. I personally never go on vacation without something to keep my hands busy, so I threw some linen on the porch floor and started a rabbit rug. I added pale blue flowers and edged the rug with soft blue shapes. This rug is in a private collection. | Click title for larger image.

Rabbit in the Grass

This is a small mat where the rabbit seems to be hiding in the grass. I love rabbits and see them quite often in my yard. The back binding is a blue flower-sprigged calico that makes the back as interesting as the front. This small mat measures 9"high by 9.5" wide and was priced at $105. It is now residing in France, having been a baby gift for a new baby girl. | Click title for larger image.

Night Friends

Night Friends has added mystery because it's taking place in the nighttime. I used a lot of old wools that really add to the complexity of the color and texture. It measures 14"h by 14"w and has a very irregular edge (which I love). The foundation fabric is linen, and it has a medium brown twill binding, a muslin sleeve and dowel for hanging, and a stamped label sewn on the back.
